Stages and theatres
Sommerhausen has become famous far beyond its borders by the "Torturmtheater" ("Gate Tower Theater") founded by Luigi Malipiero in 1950. As the name says, the theatre is located in the gate tower through which the old part of Sommerhausen can be entered from the direction of Würzburg. It is called the smallest theatre of Germany. Later, the "Torturmtheater" was run by the renowned actor, director, and painter Veit Relin, and after his death his widow took over.
In the train of the "Torturmtheater", the cabaret "Bockshorn" was founded next-door. Although it has meanwhile moved to Würzburg. The vault of the former "Bockshorn" cabaret now accommodates the intimate theatre "Sommerhaus".
