Sommerhausen has become famous far beyond its borders by the "Torturmtheater" ("Gate Tower Theater") founded by Luigi Malipiero in 1950. As the name says, the theatre is located in the gate tower through which the old part of Sommerhausen can be entered from the direction of Würzburg. It is called the smallest theatre of Germany. Today, the "Torturmtheater" is run by the renowned actor, director, and painter Veit Relin.
In the train of the "Torturmtheater", the cabaret "Bockshorn" was founded next-door. Although it has meanwhile moved to Würzburg.
The vault of the former "Bockshorn" cabaret now accommodates the intimate theatre "Sommerhaus".
In the course of time, many artists and gallery-owners have come to Sommerhausen. There are musicians, goldsmiths, and numerous antique shops offering exquisite furniture and jewellery. Thus, a charming ambience unfolds, still increased by the unity of the old town that is completely surrounded by the town wall. You will be surprised at the variety of interesting things to discover in Sommerhausen!
